15-1100 Computer Occupations
Employment growth in Computer occupations is very closely following BLS Projections averaging 132,500 positions per year. For the universe of Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) degree programs, citizens and permanent residents are earning 125,500 Associate degrees and above per year, with temporary residents adding 21,500 degrees earned. Not counting 26,000 NCES rated certificates, US degree earners are outperforming employment growth in Computer Occupations by 19,000.NCES Degrees Conferred and Certificates Awarded for Computer Occupations 2012-15
We include Associate degrees in this calculation because "Web Developers" (127,070) and much of "Computer Occupations, All Other" (223,370) do not require a Bachelor's degree. "Computer User Support Specialist" (585,060) does not currently have a degree requirement, nor are many collegiate level programs offered for the occupation. These three occupations total 863,510, or 22.4% of Computer Occupation employment for 2015. Several other occupations surveyed also employ Associate degree (or some college, no degree) credentialed personnel.

More surprising, however, is the finding that fully one-third of certificate holders also have an associate, bachelor’s or graduate degree. Such a large percentage suggests that workers are getting certificates to bolster skills or learn new ones in a tight job market. And people are going back to college for certificates throughout their careers, with a third of certificates earned by students over the age of 30.
